What Are Sacramentals in the Catholic Church?

What Are Sacramentals?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1677,  sacramentals are:
“Sacred signs instituted by the Church. They prepare men to receive the fruit of the sacraments and to sanctify different circumstances of life”.  In other words, through sacramental, men are disposed to receive the chief effect of the sacraments, and various occasions in life are rendered holy.”
So, Sacramentals:
* Point us toward God
* Prepare our hearts for grace
 * Sanctify our daily lives
* They resemble the sacraments, but they are not the same.
So what’s the difference between Sacraments and Sacramentals?
In her wisdom, the Church makes a clear distinction: Sacraments were instituted by Christ and confer grace directly while Sacramentals were instituted by the Church and prepare us to receive grace
This distinction is essential. Sacramentals are not replacements for the sacraments; rather, they lead us more deeply into them.
Forms and Examples of Sacramentals
The life of the Church is rich with sacramentals, which include both actions and sacred objects. Sacramentals include but are not limited to:
* Blessing
* The Rosary
* Holy water
* Blessed medals and scapulars
* Incense used in liturgy
* Crucifixes and sacred images
* Ashes
Among all sacramentals, the Church gives special importance to blessings, which invoke God’s grace upon persons, objects, and places. Sacramentals typically include:
A prayer of the Church
A visible sign (such as the sign of the cross or the use of water)
Essentially, Sacramentals flow from the Church’s mission to sanctify the world and they are a reminder that God works through material things, and that everyday life can be directed toward holiness.  Also, that creation itself is ordered toward the glory of God.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that through the liturgy and sacramentals almost every event of [the faithful’s] lives can be sanctified by divine grace flowing from Christ’s Paschal Mystery (CCC 1670).  Thus, sacramentals help transform ordinary moments into encounters with God.
Common Misunderstandings about Sacramentals
1. Are sacramentals magical?
No. Their effectiveness does not come from the object itself, but from the prayer of the Church and the faith of the person using them.  If the effectiveness of the Sacramental is dependent on the prayer of the Church and not the object then why have so many types of oils, different candles and the likes (with so many different names and even disturbing ones in some cases), one may wonder.  Because Sacramentals is a broad field we shall leave that for another day. 
2. Do sacramentals replace the sacraments?
No. They prepare us for the sacraments and deepen our participation in them.
3. Are they optional?
While not necessary in the same way as the sacraments, sacramentals are strongly encouraged because they nourish Christian devotion and daily holiness.

In a world increasingly disconnected from the sacred, sacramentals:
Restore a sense of the presence of God
Strengthen personal devotion
Help Catholics live their faith visibly and concretely
They serve as constant reminders that our faith is not only interior but also lived through signs, symbols, and actions.
